Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management
Evaluate dairy cattle, defend your decisions with oral reasons, and build the observation, communication, and decision-making skills the industry rewards.
The Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management Career Development Event challenges students to think like dairy producers. Participants evaluate classes of dairy cattle for conformation and production potential, place them in order of merit, and defend their decisions through a set of oral reasons delivered to a judge.
What students do
- Judge and place classes of dairy cattle on type and production traits
- Analyze pedigree and herd-record data to make sound management decisions
- Deliver oral reasons that justify their placings under time pressure
- Identify dairy breeds, equipment, and best-practice herd management
Why it matters
Beyond the show ring, this event builds the skills careers and life reward: sharp observation, confident public speaking, data-driven decision-making, and a working knowledge of animal science and the dairy industry. Members leave more articulate, more analytical, and ready for further study or a career in agriculture.
