1.12 How Do Plants Drink

“How Do Plants Drink?” is a small-group lesson from the National FFA Mentoring Program’s Grow Your PALS Program Guide (Unit: Plants and Gardening). Students build a model “Straw Flower” with a paper-towel core and place it in colored water to observe how water moves up the stem, learning to draw conclusions from the experiment and define capillary action.

  • One flower for interest approach (a long stemmed flower, such as a carnation or rose)

  • One paper flower for Straw Flower (see PALS1.12.SG.AS.B)
  • Colored pencils for each student
  • One glass beaker or jar for each student
  • Blue or green food coloring
