1.15 Seed Detective

“Seed Detective” (Lesson 1.15) is a one-on-one mentoring activity from the National FFA Grow Your PALS Program Guide, part of the Plants and Gardening unit. Working as “seed detectives,” the mentor and mentee examine mystery seeds and go on a hunt—outdoors and in the kitchen—to identify where common seeds come from, teaching young students to recognize seeds found outside and in foods.

Materials
  • Plastic bag for collecting seeds
  • Two common foods with seeds (example: apple, orange, green beans, squash, pumpkin)
  • One seed from each of two common foods
  • One seed from each of two common outdoor plants (example: walnut, acorn, flower seeds, grass seed)
  • Nearby (two to three minute maximum walk) outdoor area where seeds can be found, such as a flower or vegetable garden, or an area with trees.
