1.25 Rock-n-Roll Ice Cream

This is a small-group lesson (Lesson 1.25, “Rock-n-Roll Ice Cream”) from the National FFA Mentoring Program “Grow Your PALS” Field to Fork unit. Mentors guide students through identifying the ingredients used to make ice cream and then making homemade ice cream by hand-rolling coffee cans packed with ice and rock salt. The lesson covers the source and purpose of cream, salt, vanilla, and ice, and includes assessment, application activities, and a data-collection/bar-graph worksheet.

Materials
  • One large (2 lb., 7oz.) coffee can with lid
  • One one-pound coffee can with lid
  • One pint of half-and-half or light cream
  • One half cup sugar
  • One teaspoon vanilla
  • Six – seven cups crushed ice
  • Three-quarter cup rock salt
  • Toppings, such as sprinkles, fudge or candy, may be desired
