2.2 Quick Lesson: Where Does Your Food Dollar Go
This Food for America “Quick Lesson” (Unit 2: Processing) teaches upper elementary students how the food dollar is divided among production, processing, and marketing, showing that farmers and ranchers receive only about 19 cents of each food dollar. Using Activity Sheet 9:1 and a USDA-based breakdown chart, students estimate and label how each portion of a dollar is spent. The resource also includes a companion butter-making demonstration plan illustrating agricultural processing.
