2.3 How Are Pigs Raised: Swine Production Systems

This middle school agricultural literacy lesson, “How Are Pigs Raised? Swine Production Systems,” teaches students about the two major swine production systems (indoor and outdoor) and the accepted management practices for each stage in a pig’s life cycle (farrow, nursery, grower-finish, and market). Through a decision-making interest approach, readings, a timeline activity, and a creative drawing review, students compare production systems and chart swine development from birth to market. The lesson includes activity sheets, transparency masters, and an assessment quiz.
