“Searching for Vitamin C” is Lesson 39 (Food Science unit) of the Grow Your PALS Program Guide, a large-group mentoring lesson. Students learn the meaning of an “indicator” and create a water-cornstarch-iodine indicator solution to test and rank fruit juice samples by their vitamin C content, then chart their results.

- 1 tablespoon measure
- water
- science lab beaker (with 250 milliliter and 75 milliliter markings or kitchen liquid measuring cup(s) with metric markings)
- container and Bunsen burner (or small pan and stove)
- small pan or bowl
- eyedropper
- 2 percent iodine solution (available at a pharmacy)
- 5 (¼-cup) samples of fruit juices and drinks to be tested (Quantity can change if you use fewer juices.)
- 15-milliliter test tubes (5 of them and a rack or 5 small, equal-sized glass containers)
