2.4 Livestock Management Practices

This middle school agricultural literacy lesson teaches students about common livestock management practices used in U.S. production systems, including castration, dehorning, vaccination, identification, docking, teeth clipping, debeaking, and shearing. Through an interest approach comparing human life events to livestock practices, an interactive “Go-Get-It” activity, and a species-matching worksheet, students explain the uses of these practices and which species they apply to. The lesson includes a definition-matching evaluation and application activities involving veterinarians, FFA, and SAE.
