2.6 Where Do They Come From – The Chicken and the Egg
This middle school lesson, “Where Do They Come From? The Chicken and the Egg,” teaches students about the two main types of chicken production systems—egg production and meat production—and the management practices for each. Through an interactive “Little Professor” peer-teaching activity, a dice review game, and brainstorming, students learn key terms (egg, pullet, broiler, breeder birds) and the step-by-step processes for producing eggs and chicken meat. It is part of the Animal Science: Production Systems unit of the Middle School Food and Agricultural Literacy Curriculum.
