5.1 Keeping Food Safe

This is a primary-grade lesson from Unit 5: Food Safety (“Keeping Food Safe”) in the Food for America curriculum. Through a story about Maria and Cob, a Choral Response activity, and a coloring activity sheet, students learn why safe food handling is an important responsibility, three basic food safety rules (clean hands, cook thoroughly, keep food cold), and that bacteria—which cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted—are the main cause of food-borne illness.
