5.4 How About Taking a Bird’s Eye View of the Forest
This middle school forestry lesson (MS.NR.5.4) teaches students about silviculture and the rationale behind five forest harvesting techniques: clear-cutting, seed-tree, shelterwood, group selection, and single-tree selection systems. Students create a foldable “Knowbook” of the systems and build a clay model on a paper plate showing a “bird’s eye view” of how each harvested forest area would appear from above.
