This is an open letter dated June 5, 2020, from Jayme Buttke, Executive Secretary/Treasurer of the Wisconsin Association of Fairs, written during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using an extended metaphor comparing a fair to a “grand champion pie,” it explains the many interdependent components (carnival, entertainment, vendors, exhibits, sponsors, volunteers, judges, patrons, permits, and safety measures) that go into planning and producing a fair, and asks the public for understanding when fairs make adjustments or cancellations for the 2020 season. It is an advocacy/informational letter rather than a classroom lesson plan.
