Jordan and Amari – Composting Research SAE
This FFA lesson plan, “Composting Research,” uses a video about Jordan and Amari’s research-based supervised agricultural experience (SAE) studying barriers to urban composting to introduce students to research SAEs. Through the “Asking Questions” and “Research It!” worksheets, students learn to create survey questions, explore research topics on the USDA Agricultural Research Service website, and formulate questions they can answer through research.

Common Core – Reading: Informational Text
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.9-10.4Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language of a court opinion differs from that of a newspaper).
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.9-10.8Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning.
Common Core – Science & Technical Subjects
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.9-10.7Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart) and translate information expressed visually or mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into words.
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.9-10.9Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources (including their own experiments), noting when the findings support or contradict previous explanations or accounts.
