Jared Poldervaart – SAE – Dairy Farm

This is a 45-minute FFA lesson plan built around a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) video of a student, Jared, working at a dairy farm to manage herd genetics. Students watch the video, learn key genetics terminology via a crossword, and practice using Punnett squares to predict offspring genotypes and phenotypes, with a hands-on jellybean/Easter egg genetics activity as follow-up.

Dairy Farm SAE

Jared Poldervaart, a junior from Hamilton City, California, shares his journey in a supervised agricultural experience on his family farm. He manages 270 acres and 850 dairy cows while learning about dairy science and genomic testing. Despite challenges in time management, he gains valuable skills in herd genetics and sample processing. Jared encourages students to stay committed to their SAE projects and consider new opportunities.
